Q&A with Kristen Werner - Brand Specialist

Who is Kristen Werner?

What is your business & why do you do what you do?

I am Kristen Werner, creative connector, personal and business brand specialist and all round advocate for building and telling a strong consistent brand story.

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try.” – Dr Seuss

This Dr Suess quote is one of my favorites. No problem is too big, no challenge is too hard, it all comes down to the way you think. As a creative person I am constantly thinking of a solution or a different way of tackling a ‘problem.’ It’s what I love the most about who I am!

For me, your brand, whether personal or professional, is your biggest asset. My passion? Is to understand and visually communicate a brand story; and to empower people with their own personal brand knowledge.

I offer my clients over 15 years of Corporate brand management experience, high level strategic thinking and a keen eye for understanding who you and your brand visually are. I have spent the last 5 years mentoring and educating women on the power of their personal brand. My aim is to help women build a more confident brand style both business and personal.

Why do business owners need to focus on building a personal brand?

Put simply; you can't market a brand successfully, you don't understand.

Would you build a house on sand? No! Because it would crumble quickly.

However, if you build it on a solid, strong foundation it will last the test of time and have the ability to be built upon.

So just like that house; a personal brand needs a strong foundation, if you understand your story, get clear on your purpose and focus on your visual look and feel your house, your brand, will stand very strong and last the test of time.

What are the key elements of building a personal brand?

Knowing and owning your story is one of the fundamental keys to your personal brand.

I have created a five-step approach to understanding your brand;

  • Get to clear on what makes you unique

  • Be brave and understand the power your weakness has in building your strengths

  • Understanding your own life’s lessons, finding your why and listening to other people’s stories

  • Creating your coat of armour

  • Then practising and owning your brand

What is your No 1 tip for anyone wanting to build a personal brand?

Take out all the bullsh*t and focus on you.

Don’t be someone else who may look like they are achieving, nobody is you and that is your greatest power. The clearer you are on who you are and what drives you, the clearer your message becomes.

If you want to build a personal brand then take a look at what you consider to be your weakness and try to turn into your strength. I see power in owning your challenges and looking at why they help drive and guide you.

What have you seen change for your clients when they do the work on their personal brand?

Honestly, I see a change in the way clients talk about themselves. The way they own their space and confidence especially in their ability to engage with their audience. It’s like a confidence switch is turned on and sometimes all it took was asking one more time…but why. Why do you think that way, or feel that way.

I try to hear the things clients are not saying and then, like the Dr Suess quote I think of a different way to help them see it a different way.

What would you like to see change with how businesses think about personal branding?

For me, personal branding isn’t putting a filter on yourself, it isn’t getting a good brand photoshoot done, it isn’t getting your entire brand consistent. It’s much deeper (to start with).

I want my clients to make a change with the way they think about themselves and then reframe the way they tell their story. I want people to understand the massive impact their life story has on who they are and how they can build a seriously kickass brand with substance and impact.
